Gifts that Give Back: Exclusive ‘Red Lacquer Elephant Bag’ Benefits Endangered Asian Elephants

Krabi, Thailand – October, 2015 – Phulay Bay, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve is pleased to announce an exclusive partnership with Bangkok-based Lotus Arts de Vivre, with the debut a one-of-a-kind charitable Red Lacquer Elephant Bag. Lotus Arts de Vivre will donate 100 percent of proceeds from the sale of the bag to benefit Elephant Family, a charity dedicated to protecting Asian elephants and their habitats.

The ‘Red Lacquer Elephant Bag’ partnership is the latest example of Phulay Bay’s commitment to enriching guest experiences while strengthening its community footprint. The bag is now available for purchase in the Phulay Bay gift shop for 225,000 THB ($6,214 USD).

All proceeds from the sale of the ‘Red Laquer Elephant Bag’ will benefit Elephant Family in their quest to preserve natural habitats and increase elephant welfare through research, awareness and initiatives. Launched in 2002 under the patronage of the Rajmata of Jaipur and Sir Evelyn de Rothschild, Elephant Family’s other founders include the Hon. Mark Shand, Robin Russell, Caroline Casey and Nicholas Claxton.

Over the past 100 years, Thailand has seen a 90 percent decrease of Asian elephants due to massive habitat loss. In 2010, Asian elephants were added to the Red List of Threatened Species by the International Union for Conversation of Nature (IUCN). Now extinct in West Asia, Java and most of China, elephants are a top concern throughout Thailand, where the majectic animals have long been revered as a traditional symbol of power and peace, and a spiritual mentor for many.

The exclusive ‘Red Laquer Elephant Bag’ was conceived from start-to-finish by Artist Rolf von Bueren, Chairman of Lotus Arts de Vivre, who notoriously travels the globe in search of inspiration, materials and techniques for his creations. The bag is made of luxurious Asian materials including black silk, scarab, silver-black rhodium and feautures a traditional Chinese cinnabar red lacquer. Lacquer, as a special mention, is a the natural resin from the sap of a lac tree, and takes about 200 days to create, with each layer taking up to 2 days.

“We are happy to partner with Phulay Bay to raise money for Elephant Family, started by our dear friend, the Hon. Mark Shand to support Asian Elephants.” said Rolf von Bueren. “The whole campaign aims to raise a total of £1 million, 100% of which will go towards securing a series of pioneering elephant corridors in Asia and other Elephant Family projects. With partners and supporters such as The Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall and Quintessentially Foundation, we have committed to raise funds for the charity. ”
“We are honored to be part of a movement that supports the habitat of Asian elephants, the scared animal of our region,” said Carlos Tarrero, General Manager of Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve. “This collaboration with Lotus Arts de Vivre and Elephant Family allows our guests to make an impact on the community and leave with a special gift that will enrich their Ritz-Carlton Reserve memories for years to come.”

Phulay Bay strives daily to raise awareness of this sacred, yet endangered mammal. Koko, a two-year-old baby elephant staying at a elephant camp on the property, greets guests twice a week. Everyone who meets Koko instantly falls in love with his majestic presence, tenderness and enchanting personality. It is these unforgettable moments that Phulay Bay is partnering with Lotus Arts de Vivre to preserve.

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company L.L.C. Sets New Standards in Refined Luxury with the Opening of Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Krabi South Thailand

The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C., recognised as the global leader in luxury hotels, service and lifestyle, is proud to announce the opening of its debut Reserve property, Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, today in Krabi, Southern Thailand.

As the world’s first Ritz-Carlton Reserve, Phulay Bay embodies the attributes, philosophy and unique style and design of the Reserve brand extension. It has been designed for those who seek to escape the stresses of everyday life and immerse themselves into a completely bespoke and personally-tailored-to-suit vacation experience.

Set on the shores of the Andaman Sea, Phulay Bay is a striking 54-villa and pavilion boutique hotel offering unspoilt views of the naturally rugged shoreline and dramatic limestone karsts which make up this beautiful part of southern Thailand.

The resort is the vision and work of in-demand Thai architect Lek Bunnag, and is an awe-inspiring combination of modern styling and architecture; grand and oversized in scale with distinctive accents from not only Thai, but Middle Eastern and Moroccan cultures. Bunnag takes inspiration from beautiful things from around the world to create an environment where the senses are continuously triggered and enlivened from the moment guests enter the resort driveway to the moment they leave.

An exhilarating sense of arrival will immediately let guests know they are somewhere special: 20ft high aubergine walls and ‘hedges’ made from indigenous trees create a sense of wonder from the outside and a great sense of peace and stillness once on the inside. Guests enter the resort through the high walls and walk over a stepping-stone pathway that leads them to a magnificent pitched-roof Thai pavilion situated on an island surrounded by thousands of gently flickering candles.

From here on in, guests subtly and gently have their senses enriched and stimulated with the resort’s own scent, signature drink, the stunning scenery from both inside the accommodation and throughout the resort, to tactile 100% Thai silk soft furnishings used in the villas and restaurants.

“When styling and designing Phulay Bay, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve, we were very conscious of the abundant natural beauty surrounding us which is what makes people fall in love with Thailand,” explained Estelita Sebeto, the resort’s General Manager. “We want guests to enjoy and discover the extraordinary diversity so have worked with nature to maintain a setting that evokes the very best of the natural environment and sourced local and sustainable materials in its construction and styling.”

Working closely with Thai interior designer IA49, Bunang has carefully designed buildings and public spaces to combine contemporary with culture, perfectly complementing the natural flora of existing trees and plants which cleverly act as privacy screens throughout the grounds offering greater intimacy in the resort. The use of traditional story-telling Lanna art forms both in architectural structure and as paintings and artworks on the walls and doors of villas further stimulates the senses and creates an element of interest for guests.

No two of the resort’s 16 signature Reserve Villas are the same; all slightly different in physical design and styling, guests can opt for a villa with lap pool and lawn area for sun worshiping, a private rooftop for alfresco dining and sunset viewing, or a completely secluded pool bathing area for total privacy. Across all nonetheless, luxury prevails with oversized 3metre by 2metre beds, deep sunken baths, walk in closets, expansive decked gardens and vast ‘keyhole’ doorways that create a sense of magic setting the guest at ease and welcoming them to luxury.

With an emphasis on personalised, bespoke experiences, guests can ‘design’ or tailor make their visit to perfectly suit their needs and desires. Their very own villa butler, can organise a light BBQ lunch at a favourite beach spot; a meditation class with local monks; elephant trekking to a remote picnic spot; a sea plane tour of region’s dramatic scenery; an in-villa personal yoga session; a boat journey to surrounding islands - the possibilities are endless.

World-class culinary experiences will be available throughout the resort’s six intimate and carefully thought-out restaurants. Each designed to accommodate a small number of guests for highly personalised and non intrusive service. Phulay Bay in Krabi, Thailand will be the first property to open in 2009. As of today, guests can visit a dedicated website at http://www.ritzcarltonreserve.com/. These unique resorts have been designed for those who seek to escape the stresses of everyday life by retreating to experience new cultures and adventures.

Each exquisite destination will feature signature, one-of-a-kind low density resorts situated in choice settings, each with a distinctive personality and sense of place. Future development will be limited to select corners of the globe with upcoming locations to include Costa Rica, Puerto Rico, Turks & Caicos and The United Arab Emirates.

“The entire Ritz-Carlton Reserve portfolio of idyllic retreats will offer guests a contemporary interpretation of the local lifestyle and culture. The concept is simple and yet exudes style and luxurious levels of comfort. The resorts provide a complete escape to the unexpected; a private, exclusive leisure experience that blends unique elements of the local culture, history, and heritage with intuitive individual service, exquisite indigenous design, casual ambiance, and respect for the surrounding environment,” said Simon Cooper, president and chief operating officer, The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company. “We do not work to one design mold, but rather allow the creative process to be destination and customer focused. Each Ritz-Carlton Reserve property around the globe will personify a unique design befitting of its locale.”

The architectural design philosophy is to create low-rise suites and villas that boast private panoramic views of serene oceans, tropical gardens or desert landscapes. The four natural elements are represented in the design: Fire to create romantic interiors, Water in bathing sanctuaries, Air in creative spaces for contemplation and reflection and Earth with the discreet treatment of technology that can be utilized or ignored.

The visionary design allows guests to experience a completely secluded environment, with as much or as little contact with the rest of humanity as they choose. Tranquil spa treatments, candlelit dining and a refreshing dip in the water can be done in the privacy of a villa or suite, or within the intimate settings of the resort facilities. The indigenous décor will be reflected in guestrooms and public spaces, with the finest quality furniture, finishes, artwork and detailed touches. Expansive villas and suites may feature personal plunge pools, outdoor rainforest showers or baths and private verandahs. Coupled with individualized service by a personal concierge to provide assistance that is unobtrusive yet intuitive, felt but not seen, invisible yet apparent.

The launch of Ritz-Carlton Reserve sees the beginning of a journey to the most captivating corners of the world, abounding with extraordinary possibilities and attention. A voyage of discovery steeped in luxury and limited only by ones imagination.

Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

Nestled on the shore of the Andaman Sea, the exclusive resort is the vision of in-demand Thai architect Lek Bunnag and features modern styling and architecture with accents of Thai culture and design.
The architecture, landscape, interiors and accessories fuse to create a marriage of style and design that is completely in keeping with and tied to the natural environment of the location. Oversized beds, pillows, chairs, baths and doorways create a sense of comfort and welcoming that sets the guest at ease and welcomes them into the resort.

Combining contemporary Thai styling in the buildings with preservation of the environment, the natural flora of existing trees and plants relies on the past and tradition to create something sustainable today and for the future. The use of traditional Lanna art forms both in architectural structure and design as well as paintings and artworks on the walls and doors of the villas further create a contemporary setting that draws on tradition to offer a unique and luxurious environment and further enlivens the senses.

With accommodations that offer unspoiled ocean views, private plunge pools, sheltered outdoor baths and showers set among lush indigenous flora, the sense of privacy and comfort allows guests to indulge in the scenery and detach from the world during their stay. Coupled with the natural warmth and easy smiles of the Thai people and the legendary Ritz-Carlton service, Phulay Bay is the perfect destination to host the first of Ritz-Carlton Reserve’s exotic, hand-picked hideaways.

These not-for-profit activities, called “VolunTeaming,” were introduced to The Ritz-Carlton in 2009 and are held at various properties in conjunction with a community organization of the property’s choice.

Phulay Bay, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve has partnered with Green Fins (www.greenfins.net), which protects and conserves coral reefs by establishing and implementing environmentally friendly guidelines for a sustainable diving tourism industry, in an effort to continue its commitment to the community and environment. Since these coral reefs host marine life, many clownfish, or anemone fish, are becoming endangered by humans. Many people are catching the fish to keep as pets but do not have an understanding that by doing so, they are putting them into danger and decreasing their lifespan. In an effort to educate their guests on these issues and on the natural environment that surrounds the property, Phulay Bay is offering an activity called “Releasing Nemo”.

This VolunTeaming experience will be a day of water activities in Phi Phi Island consisting of inclusive training on clownfish species, symbiotic living with anemones and the threat to their reproduction system, as well as underwater photography guideline and training on protecting of reef and underwater environment. Guests will receive a t-shirt of Green Fins, training material and disposable underwater cameras the night before and a Reserve picnic lunch to enjoy on the boat ride back from Phi Phi Island.

VolunTeaming will continue Phulay Bay’s commitment to the community and enhance the property’s most sought-after activities, such as scuba diving and
snorkeling, for years to come.

• Complimentary spice-infused welcome drinks in the Arrival Pavilion and throughout all of the resort’s six restaurants
• Spice-scented cool down hand towels throughout all of the resort’s restaurants
• Signature spiced evening turndown cookies baked by our Thai pastry chef
• Refreshing poolside spice-infused beverages (alcoholic and non-alcoholic), along with daily afternoon spice demonstrations led by Phulay Bay’s Spice Concierge
• Spice-infused scrub treatments at ESPA to further elevate the multiple health benefits of the spice
Aspiring Thai chefs will also have a chance to bring a taste of Thailand to their own kitchen with complimentary spice packets, distributed to guests following the daily Spice Concierge presentations. The packets include a sample of the Thai spice, along with a native Thai recipe that incorporates the spice. Guests can impress their friends at their next dinner party with an authentic Thai satay, featuring ginger along with a fresh lemongrass cocktail, as they recall their time spent on the shores of the Andaman Sea.

Celebrate the Thai New Year with the traditional Sonkran Festival at Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve

What’s more, the daily Thai spice vitamin shots add an additional boost to the well-being bliss, complete with an initial tutorial on the health benefits of each spice to tailor to individual preferences and needs.

Wellness Goes Beyond The Spa At Phulay Bay, A Ritz-Carlton Reserve With New Tea And Treatment Pairings

KRABI – THAILAND – ESPA at Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve blends the powerful health benefits of tea into their spa rituals with customized pairings to enhance treatments and meet individual health needs. Utilizing indigenous ingredients, each tea and treatment pairing complements the benefits of the guest’s spa experience from beginning to the end. As guests arrive at the oasis of calm on the shores of Southern Thailand, they are welcomed with a customized herbal tea in preparation for their spa therapy. Upon departure guests receive individually curated tea leaves to ensure the benefits of ESPA are available long after their treatment.

With spa therapies that balance, purify, and nourish, ESPA has designed tea pairings with herbs and other native plants such as lemongrass, safflower, butterfly pea, and roselle, to name a few. For example, ESPA’s signature Sun Soothing Ritual, which includes a pink mud body wrap, a body massage using oils rich in regenerating palmarosa and myrrh, an Oriental head massage, and a facial with cool stones, is paired with safflower tea leaves which complement the treatment with detoxifying and antioxidant properties known to reduce inflammation and redness, as well as strengthen overall immunity.

The Thai Herbal Infusion Ritual focuses on restoring balance with treatments from foot to head for a full body rejuvenation. It targets the flow of energy though the body using warm essential oils and herbal poultices with acupressure movements made with jasmine, peppermint, and clove. The jasmine tea that follows complements the treatment as simply smelling its scent leads the body to release chemicals that improve mood and naturally relax the mind.

“Our signature ESPA menu offers a wide range of traditionally inspired Thai, Asian, and European treatments that combine ancient and modern therapies for a holistic wellness approach,” says General Man-ager Carlos Tarrero. “Inspired by the Reserve service and Thai hospitality, the integration of tea pairings with all ESPA therapies provides our guests with an elevated level of well-being and offers them an opportunity to take their rejuvenating experience at Phulay Bay far beyond their time at the resort.”

Set among the backdrop of the lush tropical jungle and the tranquility of the limestone karts, the peaceful haven in ESPA features an outdoor vitality pool, wellness studio and exotic open air spaces, 11 treatment rooms, aromatherapy steam rooms, fitness studio, spacious relaxation areas, and The Raw Bar, a spa café offering a selection of local fruits, vegetables, fresh juices and herbal teas to complement the rejuvenating spa experience.

GLOBAL MEETS LOCAL: THAI-INSPIRED MACARONS AT PHULAY BAY, A RITZ-CARLTON RESERV

KRABI – THAILAND – Bringing the flavors of Thailand together with a culinary classic, Phulay Bay, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve in Krabi, Thailand has created a special treat for guests visiting the resort with their new Thai-inspired macarons. Using indigenous ingredients from Southern Thailand, such as jasmine, kaffir lime, lemongrass, ginger, galangal and chili, grown on-property in the bamboo-encased garden, these sweet and savory pastries combine the best of classic French cuisine with the best of Thailand.

Guests are invited to participate in sourcing the handpicked, organic spices and herbs from the garden to create their own Thai-inspired macarons together with Phulay Bay's pastry chef. Ranging from sweet to spicy, each flavor offers a fresh, authentic taste of Thailand. Chocolate lovers will crave the chocolate jasmine macaron while the ginger or chili macaron will satisfy the palate of those seeking a more savory treat.

The Thai-inspired macarons are the latest offering inspired by Phulay Bay’s commitment to utilizing fresh, locally-grown ingredients and offering guests genuine, hands-on culinary experiences. Starting with their bartanicals cocktail program, a garden-to-glass adventure introduced earlier this year, guests have been using indigenous ingredients sourced from the on-property garden to make cocktails at the Chomtawan Sunset Bar, such as the Kaffir Chom, made with rum, kaffir lime, apple juice, lychee juice, lime juice and syrup. The new garden-to-pastry experience will offer guests a new way to explore the natural beauty of Thailand while creating a delectable dessert.

“By taking a globally-recognized and celebrated pastry such as the macaron and adding locally-sourced ingredients from our garden, we are able to offer our guests an experience that is authentic to the destination of Krabi,” says General Manager Carlos Tarrero. “These treats offer a taste of the familiar but with a genuinely Thai twist.”
